Welcome to Desert Expressions.
New — “Tatami Style” handbags and purses from Cambodia!
The purses on this site are from a small network of workers in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, who specialize in “tatami style” handbags and purses. The business operates under the “fair trade” practice and promotes self-initiative and even finances sewing machines for workers who prefer to work at home on their own time.
Since the business doesn’t belong to a union like most factories, workers are able to work roughly 40 hours a week and earn up to double the factory wages while enjoying complete freedom.
We offer a collection of fine art and functional textiles created by Southwest artisans, based in Tucson. Art comes in many forms varying in style, functionality and purpose. It can be inspiring, intriguing, comforting, practical or just fun! Its purpose is as individualistic as those who acquire it.
To an artisan, the art she creates is an outward expression and revelation of her individual personality and spirit. It is an outlet of energy. Once created, it's always more meaningful when shared.
Desert Expressions was formed as collaborative effort between several artisans as an outlet to sell their artistic creations, with the added mission of sharing part of the proceeds with various charities throughout the world. The concept is simple. Beautiful, one-of-a-kind handcrafted art is offered at a discounted price, and then a donation is made to the charity of the buyer's choice.
Shop & Give
Simply browse through the portfolio pages and make your selection. Check out by selecting the <purchase> button. You can purchase artwork in three easy steps. Please check the box for the charity you'd like to support on the Order page. If the charity that you would like to designate is not listed, you may select "other" and type in your choice. Your donation of either 15% of the purchase price or $5, whichever is greater, will be deducted from your purchase total and you will receive a receipt. It's simple. All charitable contributions are tax-deductible.
Artists
Desert Expressions currently exhibits the artwork of two artisans. Browse through the portfolio page of Diane Redhair, featuring canvas prints of her oil originals. Each is bold and beautifully designed and rich in color. Diane's work reflects the color and the natural beauty of the Southwest desert.
Cindy Klinge's portfolio page includes acrylic painted floor cloths, table textiles and a collection of original jewelry. Cindy combines texture and bold colors to create textile pieces that are playful and functional. (Additional pieces to be added soon).
Desert Expressions will be adding more artisans soon, so please check back.
On behalf of all of the artisans and benefiting charities, we would like to thank you.
Please Enjoy!
